In Defense of the Unitaskers

December 20, 2012

If you know Chef’n you know we are foodies who love a home cooked meal. You know we’re also busy parents and professionals who want to save time and money wherever we can. When shopping for Christmas this year we’ve kept a sharp eye, trying to buy only the most needed, most creative gifts that we know will get used…well, the most.

Today, cruising through our favorite facebook pages, we saw a picture of the Stem Gem on NPR. We thought hooray! This little strawberry huller is a Chef’n Essential and at only $7.99 great stocking stuffer! Then we saw the title…CaptureNow, we understand that yes, there are goatee shavers, small toe towels, and enormous counter-space eating apple corers out there. But what about the garlic press, the electric can opener, or the oyster knife? We think some of these gadgets are truly worth their salt. At Chef’n, we love making products like the Stem Gem that save you time in the kitchen. It’s also important we just make cooking a little more fun. Because come on, who doesn’t need a set of grinders equipped with their own knife and fork?

We just had to post this feature about the most clever and colorful citrus juicers Better Homes and Gardens could find. Yes, our FreshForce Citrus Juicer was featured as a press with power no lemon can withstand. But to this little copywriter the best part was the clever title Pulp Friction. Love it!

May 29, 2012

Did you know today is “Learn about Composting Day”? We didn’t either but its true! Currently in the U.S. we reuse or recycle only about 3% of our food waste. Considering Americans waste 40% of the food we grow and raise, that is a lot of food waste building up in our landfills. Want to be part of the solution? Learn to compost!  And there’s no better looking way than with our EcoCrock Compost Bin. Visit the links below to get started, and Happy Composting!

3 Top Tools for Grilling

May 20, 2012 at by Sharon Franke | 0 Comments

According to Weber’s 23rd GrillWatch Survey, 71 percent of you will be firing up your backyard grill next Monday for Memorial Day. And you’re most likely to be cooking the old standbys: hamburgers, chicken, and steak. But if the folks who manufacture grilling equipment have anything to say about it, you’ll be grilling up a whole lot more. This year we’ve seen tools specifically designed for grilling meatballsmeat loafquesadillaschicken legs standing up, and even s’mores. While we had a lot of fun testing all of them (you can tell from the picture above, that the s’mores maker was a big hit with my grandkids), three of them struck us as particularly worthy of room in the storage area under your grill.
For cute little hamburgers, there’s the cute little Chef’n Slider Burger Press ($7.95). It stamps out perfect 2 ½-ounce sliders, great for little kids or appetizer portions for adults.
What are you grilling this weekend? If you need help deciding, be sure to see all the recipes our test kitchen has to offer. For help setting up, check out Elizabeth Karmel’s post on how to get ready for grilling season.
To learn how we put consumer products to the test and keep you safe, sign up for a tour of the famous Good Housekeeping Research Institute. If you visit, be sure to say hello when you come by the Kitchen Appliances & Technology Lab.

The 70 Power Players in the Seattle Food World

“Who keeps Seattle’s food engines running? Who has the power, the respect and the influence to set trends, challenge the status quo and reshape the culinary landscape? We sussed out the people and institutions who have had—and continue to have—the most substantial impact on how we eat, what we eat and what we’ll want to eat in the future.”

David Holcomb, that’s who! Our own CEO and Famous Inventor has been included on a list of 70 people and places that have the most sway over the city’s vibrant foodie scene. The list was compiled by one of its most influential publications, Seattle Magazine. What a great birthday surprise for Chef’n! Congratulations David!

The SleekStor® Pinch+Pour™ Measuring Beakers have been named one of the five finalists in the Gadgets & Kitchen Tools Category for the 2012 Housewares Design Awards. According to an article in November’s issue of HomeWorld Business “Housewares Design Awards finalists were chosen based on design believed to differentiate a product with unique appearance and/or function. The judges considered appropriate aesthetics, innovative materials and technology, user benefits (i.e. performance, comfort, ease of use, safety) and market response.” Well, we think that about covers it. Congratulations Chef’n!
